Reflecting on my year as a Bioinformatics student, I can say it’s been a journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery. At the start, I was a mix of nerves and excitement. I was excited about diving deeper into the field and exploring the real-world applications of data and medical sciences, but I was also aware of the challenges ahead. The course has a reputation for being demanding, and I was preparing myself for a steep learning curve.

The lectures were engaging and practical, often opening my eyes to how vast and impactful medical sciences can be. Our lecturers were a great support, not just in delivering content but in helping us better understand the coursework itself. They kept an open-door policy, making it easy to seek extra help whenever something wasn’t entirely clear. This approach made a significant difference, making the experience more manageable and helping me stay on track.

The real highlight of my year, though, has been my honours project. Working on it took me on an unexpected journey, one that pushed me to not only develop my technical skills but also taught me how to think critically about the information I was gathering. In the beginning, drafting my research proposal felt like tackling a puzzle with pieces I was only starting to understand. However, as I moved forward, I began to appreciate the value of carefully analysing data and deriving insights that could translate into real-world impact.

One of the most rewarding parts was building a model based on my research findings, knowing that it had the potential to contribute to health sciences in a meaningful way. This experience showed me that there’s a deeper purpose behind every figure and result. It’s not just about collecting data but understanding how to use it responsibly to create something beneficial.  Seeing how my work could fit into the bigger picture of health science was incredibly fulfilling.

Now, as the year ends, I feel grateful for the opportunity this course has offered me. It’s challenged me academically, encouraged me personally, and given me a taste of what it means to work in a field where every effort has the potential to make a difference. I’m looking forward to taking these experiences forward and building on everything I’ve learned.
