What a journey it has been! Looking back to my first day in this Honours degree, everything feels so much clearer now.
Initially, the thought of two weeks of general techniques, followed by three weeks of stream-based practicals, twelve intense weeks of modules, and a demanding exam week, I was honestly overwhelmed. I kept worrying about how I was going to balance everything. However, those challenging moments taught me invaluable lessons.
There were times when the workload felt too much, with days merging into a continuous cycle of lectures, lab reports, readings, nights spent brainstorming and working on my research proposal which set the stage for my research project. But I never anticipated how much I would grow through these challenges, not only academically but personally as well. I became more disciplined, learned to manage my time effectively, and grew confident in tackling complex problems on my own. Each module presented its unique challenges and rewards. Whether it was exploring unfamiliar topics or revisiting familiar topics from a critical perspective, I constantly found myself pushed to grow, in a positive way. It wasn’t always easy, but it was worthwhile.
Now that the modules and exams are behind me, I’m excited to dive into my research project. This part of the journey feels different. It’s more focused and personal. It’s no longer just about me absorbing information; it’s about making a meaningful contribution to my field.
When you’re in the midst of tough times, it’s easier to complain and hope it would all just end. But once it is over, and you step back to take it all in, you realize that every late night, every difficult week, and every setback played a role in getting you to where you are now. The struggle shapes you and the pressure refines you. In the end, hardship fosters perseverance, and perseverance leads to personal growth. From where I stand now, with the past behind me and a new horizon ahead, the view is beautiful.
