As the academic year comes to an end, I find myself reflecting on everything that this journey has brought me. It has been a year of incredible personal and academic growth, full of challenges, lessons, and meaningful relationships that have impacted me in ways I did not expect. The transition into an honours program at UCT was not an easy one, especially coming from a different institution for my undergraduate studies. I had to quickly adapt to new academic expectations, a more intense workload, and a faster pace of learning.
At times, it was difficult for me to find a balance between coursework, research, and personal well-being. With the pressure to meet academic deadlines and manage lab work, it was easy to become consumed by the workload. But I realized that constantly pushing myself without taking breaks prevented me from being productive. Over time, I learned how to manage my time better, by prioritizing my tasks and setting smaller, more realistic goals. This helped me become more efficient in managing my academic responsibilities and making time for self-care.
One of the highlights of this year was the return to in-person classes after spending most of my previous years of study online. The opportunity to interact with classmates and lectures face to face was a refreshing change. One of the most significant lessons I have learned this year is the value of relationships and collaboration. Whether it was in class, during departmental seminars, celebratory events, or simply having lunch with classmates, these connections have been essential to my growth. The friendships I developed provided me with a support system that helped me navigate challenges and celebrate successes.
Additionally, working in two different laboratories for my project, allowed me to learn from individuals with diverse backgrounds, each contributing their unique perspectives and expertise. I have come to appreciate how much collaboration can enhance the learning experience and drive innovation in the scientific field. For example, in Africa, we face many unique and complex challenges, and it is clear that working together can lead to more effective solutions. When researchers from different disciplines, institutions, and background come together, we can create a melting pot of ideas and approaches. This diversity not only promotes innovation but also helps us push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. It reminds me that we are stronger together, and by sharing our insights and expertise, we can tackle the issues that matter most to our continent.
In this context, the mentorship I have received from lecturers and supervisors has been incredibly valuable. Learning from experienced academics who are passionate about their work has really inspired me to push the boundaries of my own understanding and approach my studies with more curiosity and a critical mind. Their feedback, encouragement, and constructive criticism helped me grow, not just academically, but also in how I handle challenges and setbacks.
Looking ahead, I feel equipped to take on whatever comes next, both academically and personally. This year has taught me how to work under pressure, trust in my abilities and lean on the people around me when needed. As the year ends, I feel proud of the progress I have made and excited for opportunities that lie ahead. I look forward to continuing this journey of growth and discovery.
