As I embark on the second half of my honours journey, I find it only fitting to reflect on the whirlwind that has been this past year. I vividly remember my first day: getting a tour of the Human Genetics labs, meeting my fellow genetics colleagues, and feeling the excitement for the journey ahead. We were quickly immersed in a lab crash course, learning new skills and gradually becoming comfortable in the lab environment. Then came the daunting task of choosing our thesis projects. It felt like a leap into the unknown, with big, intimidating project titles that we knew little about.
Fast forward six months, and I have submitted my thesis proposal on a topic I now know so much about, presented it to my entire division, and am about to begin working with my very own patient samples! These past months have been challenging, with tests and exams coming at us from all directions. However, I’ve learned so much about fascinating topics like forensics, pharmacology, and genetic medicine. These modules have guided me toward the path I want to pursue in the future, which is a comforting realisation. As I sit at my desk on the first day back for round two of this whirlwind experience, I feel a mix of nostalgia and anticipation. The “first day scaries” are still there, but now they’re joined by the challenge of the mountain of thesis work ahead. However, I know that in six months time, I’ll be sitting here in this same seat for the last time, submitting my thesis, and feeling those same nostalgic feelings I have today.
