“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone “- Neale Donald Walsch
This quote perfectly encapsulates the experiences I am about to share with you. One day, I decided to take a leap of faith in relentless pursuit of a long-held interest-cancer research. I chose to study Radiobiology at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Despite having no funding or place to stay and much to my parents’ dismay, I boarded a plane, anxious but excited for the future that lay ahead.
The “what ifs” and “what could be’s” were irrelevant to me; I just knew what I had to do. As cliché as it may sound, I chose to follow my heart. Upon arrival, I had my fair share of challenges, things weren’t as I had expected. From difficulties adjusting with lab work to analyzing complex research articles, the journey was challenging. However, with the support of my supervisor and my classmate Justin, I had learnt to enjoy the one thing I couldn’t find myself to fathom. Tasks that were overwhelming at first, such as trypsinizing cells and grasping the narratives within research articles, now make me happy.
The biggest lesson I learned was that nothing would go as planned. Yet, this unpredictability brought beauty—each challenge I faced I managed to overcome. Adjusting to my new environment was tough, but instead of breaking me, it made room for more knowledge and skills, ultimately shaping a better version of myself. My challenges are far from over, but the difference now is that I no longer approach them with anxiety. Instead, I look forward to the learning they bring.
As a transitioning adult, I often felt unprepared, stuck in a crossroads, not knowing which path to choose and which one would be the right one. To those reading this in the future, I want to remind you that it does get better. The challenges will be difficult, but they will end, and you will succeed. You may lose your footing at times, but don’t let that discourage you. Stepping outside your comfort zone is essential for growth and allows you to become the person you’re meant to be. I know this because I am a product of it. Expect the unexpected and open your heart to new experiences.
